Ruins of Khünburg 839 m via the Jägersteig

The ascent to the Khünburg ruin follows the so-called Jägersteig all the way through the forest. The return route runs mostly along a forest road and later through the village of Khünburg on a paved road, with a few shortcuts over footpaths.

Suggestion

In the area where the route runs, the ground is covered with snowdrops in spring; later you can find grass iris and many alpine violets.

Equipment

Normal hiking equipment, sturdy footwear is recommended.

Directions

From Villach:
Take the South Motorway A2, exit Hermagor, then continue on the B111 to Khünburg. Follow the signs to the train station (turn right in Khünburg and pass under the underpass).

From Hermagor:
Drive on the B111 towards Villach, in Khünburg (after about 3 km) turn left at the turning lane and pass under the underpass to the train station.

Directions

From the bus stop on the B 111 or from the car park at the train stop on the tarmac road towards Khünburg, the so-called "Jägersteig" trail no. 19 branches off to the left just before the village. Initially straight uphill, it turns off at right angles to the north after a short while. Shortly afterwards you cross a forest road and after about 10 minutes you reach another forest road. Continue along this road and after about 50 metres the path branches off again. Now continue on the path with some steeper sections until you reach another forest road. Descend on this road for approx. 50 metres and then turn right to the castle.

To descend, return to the forest road and descend to the right until a path branches off to the right shortly after a barrier. Descend down this path, cross the forest road and shortly afterwards the path ends in a bend in the forest road at a fountain, the "Brusnbründl".

From here, continue along the forest road to the village of Khünburg, through it and on to the starting point of the tour.
