Reißkofel (2371 m)

The Reißkofel is the highest mountain of the Gailtal Alps and is a rock mountain that steeply drops on all sides, whose ascent requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. The Gailtal high route 229 also leads over the summit, from which there is an excellent panoramic view.
Equipment
Stable mountain boots are required.
Directions
From the South Motorway A2, exit Hermagor, continue on the B111 to Hermagor. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit and pass through Hermagor towards Kötschach Mauthen. Continue to follow the federal road to Reisach, then drive from Reisach to the Jochalm.

Directions

We drive from Reisach via the Reißkofelbad to the Jochalm, approx. 45 min. From there we walk to the hunting lodge and past it in many serpentines through loose alpine forest up the steep slope to the so-called Alpelspitz at 1960 m above sea level. A striking rocky head and marvellous views invite you to take a break. We then either ascend very steeply over the Hochfleck directly to the ridge (rope protection available) or head NE to the Kleiner Reißkofel and via path 229 towards the summit. This path is usually chosen as a descent, but it is also very gravelly and rocky.

After about 2 ½ hours, we have reached the summit, which offers an extensive panoramic view due to its central location. Descent via path 229 and 235.

The ascent to the Reißkofel can also be made from the Comptonhütte or the Weißbriacher Hütte.

Location & Arrival
